about the artist

I love having fun, learning new things, making people smile, and telling stories. I love seeing life through fun angles. I enjoy inspiring others as well as being inspired by others. I have the most supportive husband, best friend, and partner. We enjoy hiking, traveling, our furry kids, snowboarding, weddings, and of course, photography.

I love weddings.  Weddings are filled with thoughtful details and emotions, and I love capturing those precious memories. I love telling vivid wedding stories. I put my heart into every photo, so you will see personality, new perspectives, a great story, and life in my photos.

I work unobtrusively, using my mix of photojournalism, candid, and fine-art portraiture style.  I document those important moments with the most interesting, truthful and beautiful perspective.  I understand how much time and thought is put into each wedding - that’s why it is so important to me that you to experience your big day all over again every time you see your pictures.

The opportunity to capture your memories and tell the story of such a special day is truly an honor to me. I enjoy developing relationships with each couple, which allows me to make each set truly unique & memorable.

This blog is where I will update my most recent photos along with random bits from my life. It is a casual place to get to know each other. If there are specific photos you want to see more of, you can click on the categories at the top to see photos of that category. I hope you find what you’re looking for here. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments!  I’d love to hear from you!

arts district engagement photos | diane + eric

downtown LA engagement photo

Different from what I usually shoot, isn’t it?  Diane and Eric wanted some night shots with his car.  I usually shoot very light-weight, just my camera and 2 lenses.  Sometimes I’ll bring two bodies to an engagement shoot, but usually not.  Since they wanted some night shots, I had Jonathan go rent a tripod… and while he was at it, I had him rent 24mm tilt shift too.  :D   Might as well, right?  hehe.  I was excited to stretch myself and try something new.  It’s a lot more tiring to run around with tripods and off camera flashes.  But we had so much fun and finally put our pocket wizards to good use!

As we waited for sun to set, I got some of my standard shots.  :)   Aren’t they beautiful??

The following shot is so much easier w/ a tripod!!  All my previous versions were all hand held!

The above was taken with my 24L and the below was taken with the 24 TS.

And then it was finally dark!  Even though we were using flashes, I still wanted a softness to the photos.   I like how they turned out!

Thanks Diane & Eric for all your patience as we ran around & waited for sun to set!  It was so much fun hanging out and I’m so excited to travel up north later this month for your wedding on Santana Row!

July 30, 2009 - 7:02 am Sarah Neal - Hey... awesome stuff. Just discovered you which is excellent for me!! How did you take those last shots that you say you wanted softness in. Where was your flash in relation to them and did you use a diffuser?

July 30, 2009 - 7:03 am Sarah Neal - The reason I ask is I have a night wedding coming up that I'm STREEESSSSIN' over. I have two 580exII flashes and a pocket wizard system. I'm really looking for nighttime shot inspiration (but ofcourse have all the technicalities of that to worry about too!) THANKS for your help :)

July 30, 2009 - 7:18 am caroline - Hi Sarah, There were several setups, but the softness ones you're asking about was just my 580exII on camera. But I tilt it w/ a bounce card and let as much ambient light in as I can. I was at f1.2.
