new york engagement photography | susan + jason

Wedding season is in full swing now and I love it.  It’s like “finals week” in college, but lasts for months.  haha.  Last month, I was lucky enough to go to NY for the first time.  Thanks to the awesome internet, Susan found me from all the way in New York.  We clicked immediately through email and felt like old friends when we finally met up in NY.

I met up with Susan in the city and we took the LIRR into Long Island together.  Jason picked us up from the train station.  Right when he saw us, he walked up and grabbed all the bags from us.  A lady then came up to Susan and told her, “he’s a keeper.”  He sure is.  When I saw them together, I immediately saw how perfect they are together.

I just love the colors here.  NY was amazing and I can’t wait to go back for their wedding next month!

We even went to a beach out there.  I felt at home.

Can you believe this was right by the beach too?  Love me some tall grass!

Grassy field & beach all in one location?  Score!

LOVE these letters that Susan brought.  They’re so cute!

They are so cute & playful:

I saw clams squirting water from beneath the sand here… Jason and I both got squirted on!

I normally love color, but I love that right photo in black & white!

Susan & Jason, I am so lucky to have met you both!  You two are really amazing people and I’m so honored to document this journey for you!  Can’t wait for your wedding!

Hi Caroline, Your photography has really inspired me. My question for you is; how do you make certain areas of the image blurry while others are in focus. It appears to be more than just aperture. Are you doing something in photoshop? Your response will greatly appreciated.

caroline - June 2, 2010 - 1:45 pm

Hi Shawn, everything here is done in camera. I shoot wide open, so you get a lot of blur. :) This may have been done entirely with my 85/f1.2… I don’t remember now. If not, it’s with my 135/f2.

Caroline! These are beautiful….so beautiful. I especially love the one with the hat and the hand with the ring. Completely gorgeous. So so lovely to meet you and find someone new to follow and get inspiration from…you are too clever :) kate xxx

Hi Caroline! Thanks for your quick response..wow! I just read your post about France. My wife and I just got back from France today. In fact we just drove home from the airport. What part were you in? We started in Cannes, Monaco, then ended up in Paris. I had a great time shooting so many interesting places!

I was asking the question about the blur because in some of your pictures it appears for example that only the right top of an image is blurry, and the bottom right will be in focus. Thats all done in camera? Forgive me, but i’m a beginner and really love your work.

caroline - June 2, 2010 - 2:01 pm

kate!! thank you! i am so grateful to have met you & spent a week with you in france!

shawn, i was in st. julien l’ars for the week, then headed into poitier, then to paris for just one evening. sounds like you had a great trip! is there a specific photo you’re referring to?

shawn - June 2, 2010 - 2:11 pm

For example; in the Long Island Engagement gallery, the 4th row from the top. The bottom right, and the top left of the photo is blurry, but the middle of the picture (Susan’s face) is in focus. How did you achieve this without also having his face in focus?

caroline - June 2, 2010 - 2:15 pm

oh, that’s just depth of field. his face is much closer to the lens and her shoulder is much further. that was shot with a very low aperture (1.2 or 2.0, forgot which lens i used), so only things in the same plane as her face will be in focused.

shawn - June 2, 2010 - 2:25 pm

One last question. Once again, please forgive me as I am a beginner. I’m sure this is a stupid question, but I assume you don’t recommend using focus.

shawn - June 2, 2010 - 2:28 pm

I meant to write “Auto focus”.

caroline - June 2, 2010 - 2:44 pm

shawn, use whatever works for you. :) really. i do both, depending on the camera & lens… and the situation.

These are so cute! I especially love the black and white ones, although the colors in the colored ones are also so so beautiful. You seem to have captured them so naturally. I love it.

Beautiful! Gorgeous tones and everything looks so creamy. Was the whole session done in film?

caroline - June 4, 2010 - 11:17 pm

aaron - June 5, 2010 - 11:15 pm

Jessica Fleeman - June 24, 2010 - 1:21 pm

You are so talented! I only shoot digitally… I can’t imagine shooting film! You’re so talented!

p.s. i LOVE all of the props you use. I’m not one to use props often, but you’ve inspired me to try them out!

I have been surfing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours new york engagement photography | susan + jason » Los Angeles Wedding Photography | Pregnancy & Baby Photographer. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will be a lot more useful than ever before.
