They had a traditional Vietnamese engagement ceremony called a Dam Hoi. At the Dam Hoi, the groom-to-be and his parents come over to the bride-to-be’s house with gifts to formally request their daughters hand in marriage. The families are then formally introduced to each other, and the groom-to-be presents his bride-to-be the engagement ring. At the end of the ceremony, the bride-to-be’s family takes half of each gift (fruits, teas, roasted pig…) and returns the other half to the groom-to-be’s side.
